About Bonaire gas heaters
Bonaire is one of the most South Australian brands you can buy. Owned by Climate Technologies — a manufacturer based in Beverley, Adelaide — Bonaire has been making heating and evaporative cooling for Australian homes since the 1970s. The local connection runs deep: parts ship from a Melbourne and Adelaide network, R&D happens here, and many SA gas fitters (us included) trained on Bonaire systems early in their careers.
The brand's signature in Adelaide is the combo system — a Bonaire ducted gas heater paired with a Bonaire evaporative cooler, sharing the same ducting, controlled from one wall panel. Thousands of Adelaide homes built between 1995 and 2015 have this exact setup. The MB12 (12-zone, 12kW class) and MB6 (smaller-home version) became the staples, and the Bonaire Modulator brought modulating gas valve technology for tighter temperature control.
Where Bonaire shines: serviceable design, accessible parts (locally), and combo-system integration. Where it can frustrate: the condensate drain on MB12 and Modulator units is a known weak point. It blocks with algae and dust over summer and the heater locks out the first cold snap of winter. A standard service catches it. The other Bonaire-specific quirk is the modulating gas valve on later Modulator units — sensitive, and worth annual servicing once the heater is more than 8-10 years old.
We rate Bonaire well for repairability. A 15-year-old Bonaire MB12 with sound burner and heat exchanger can usually be brought back to as-new operation for the cost of a fan motor capacitor, a condensate clean-out and a fresh ignition control board. Replacement is rarely the first conversation we have about a Bonaire that's been looked after.

What goes wrong
Common Bonaire faults we see in Adelaide
Bonaire units have their own personality. After a couple of decades fixing them, here's the shortlist that covers most of what we attend.
- Condensate drain blockage (MB12, Modulator) — The number one Bonaire ducted fault. The condensate line clogs with dust and algae over summer; first cold snap, the safety switch trips and the unit shuts down. Cleared during a standard service or as a $189 callout.
- Fan motor failure — Indoor fan stops, rattles, or hums and trips. Often the capacitor first ($189 fitted), sometimes a full motor replacement ($389-$549).
- Ignition control board failure — No ignition, fault code on the controller. Boards available ex Climate Technologies SA. Typically $489-$689 supplied and fitted.
- Modulating gas valve drift (Modulator) — Heat output gets erratic, controller can't hold setpoint. Modulating valves are sensitive components; sometimes recoverable with cleaning, sometimes need replacement ($489-$649).
- Igniter element failure — Heater clicks, gas valve opens, no ignition. Replace igniter — a quick fix at $189-$229 fitted.
- Inteliview / Navigator controller blanking — Wall display goes dark or freezes. Sometimes a controller cable, sometimes the controller, sometimes the main board. Diagnosis first.
- Combo system zone confusion — On gas+evap combos, sometimes the cooling-side controller logic gets stuck and the gas side won't fire. We work through these systematically.
Bonaire-specific tip: if your Bonaire ducted heater has shut down at the start of winter and the controller shows a fault code starting with "F", it's almost certainly the condensate drain. Cheap fix.
