Gas heaters don't give a lot of warning before they fail. These are the signs we see most often — don't wait if any of them apply.
- You haven't serviced it in 2+ years — SA gas regulations and manufacturer specs say 2 years max. Going longer = CO risk + declining efficiency.
- You can smell gas — even faintly. Turn the heater off, call 1800 427 532 (SA gas emergency) then us.
- The flame is yellow or orange — should be mostly blue. Yellow means incomplete combustion, which creates CO.
- The pilot won't stay lit — usually a thermocouple or flame sensor problem. Usually cheap to fix if caught early.
- Banging, clicking, or whistling noises — a gas heater should be quiet. New noises mean something's changed.
- Black soot around the heater or flue — sign of combustion problems and likely CO.
- Headaches, nausea, drowsiness when it's running — classic CO poisoning symptoms. This is an emergency. Turn off the heater, ventilate the room, get medical advice.
- There's a new baby, elderly parent, or anyone with breathing issues in the house — these groups are most at risk from CO. Get the heater safety-checked before winter.
