1. You can smell gas

Even faintly. A leak can build up and ignite. Turn off the gas at the meter (usually outside the house), open windows, leave the building, call SA Gas Emergency first (1800 427 532), then us.

2. Your carbon monoxide alarm is going off

Get out of the house immediately. CO is invisible and can kill in under an hour in a closed room. Once you're outside and safe, ring emergency services if anyone is showing symptoms (headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion) then ring us.

3. Someone in the house feels sick when the heater's running

Headaches, nausea, drowsiness, dizziness that goes away when you leave the house = classic CO poisoning. Turn the heater off, ventilate, get medical advice, call us.

4. The heater's making loud banging sounds on ignition

Delayed ignition — gas builds up before lighting, then ignites in a small explosion. One will scare you. Repeated ones can damage the heater or cause a fire.

5. No heat in mid-winter + vulnerable people in the house

If you've got a newborn, elderly parent, or someone with health issues and the heater won't run, that's an emergency for us. We prioritize it.

6. Black soot or scorching around the heater or flue

Sign of combustion problems, incomplete burning, and likely CO release. Don't run the heater until we've looked at it.

7. Pilot keeps going out AND you can smell gas briefly when it fails

Possible gas valve issue. Don't keep relighting — you're venting unburnt gas into the house each time. Call us.

8. Flame is burning visibly outside the burner chamber

Flame rollout. Means combustion gases aren't going up the flue — they're coming back into the room. Fire and CO risk. Emergency.
