Every common (and uncommon) gas heater fault

Pilot light won't stay lit
Usually a dirty or failing thermocouple. Sometimes a blocked pilot orifice, sometimes gas supply pressure dropping below threshold. We test each in turn. Typical repair: $189-$249.
Heater won't ignite at all
Could be the ignitor, the gas valve, the control board, or the flame sensor. On electronic-ignition heaters, we carry the most common boards for Braemar and Brivis. Typical repair: $229-$459.
Yellow or orange flame
Means incomplete combustion — which creates carbon monoxide. Common causes: dirty burner, wrong gas pressure, blocked flue, blocked air intake. Safety issue — don't keep running it. We shut the heater down, find the cause, fix it. Typical repair: $189-$349.
Banging, clicking, or whistling noises
Banging is usually delayed ignition (gas builds up before lighting) — a safety risk. Clicking during startup is normal on some brands; continuous clicking isn't. Whistling is usually gas pressure. Typical repair: $189-$299.
Heat exchanger crack or corrosion
The most serious fault. A cracked heat exchanger leaks combustion gases (including CO) into the warm air going into your home. We check this on every service. If we find it: heater stays off, we quote replacement vs full unit swap. Typical repair: $650-$1,499 (or new unit).
Ducted system: uneven heating between zones
Usually a damper motor failure, blocked duct, or the system is undersized for your home. Full diagnosis runs on ducted systems. Typical repair: $189-$549.
Thermostat not responding
Could be the thermostat itself, the wiring, or the control board. We test each in order. Typical repair: $189-$289.
Gas smell near heater
Turn off the gas at the meter. Ventilate the room. Don't use any electrical switches. Call the SA gas emergency line: 1800 427 532 first, then us. We come out same-day for gas leaks — $249 emergency callout, but always worth it vs the alternative.

We'll always tell you honestly. Quick rule of thumb:
- Heater is under 10 years old + repair is under 50% of replacement cost → repair.
- Heater is 10-15 years old + repair is 50-70% of replacement → borderline. Usually repair is fine, but ask us about efficiency gains on a new unit.
- Heater is 15+ years old OR heat exchanger is cracked → usually replace. Old heaters burn 20-30% more gas than new ones.
- Heater has been serviced irregularly and has multiple faults → usually replace. Chasing faults one at a time on an old heater costs more than a new unit.
