About the brand

About Brivis gas heaters

Brivis has been in Australian homes since the 1980s. Originally a Melbourne-based ducted heating manufacturer, the brand built its reputation on the SP series — the SP523 in particular became one of the most installed ducted gas systems in Adelaide between the late 1990s and the early 2010s. If your house was built or renovated in that window, there's a fair chance there's a Brivis sitting in the roof space right now.

In 2014 Rinnai (the Japanese gas appliance giant) acquired Brivis. The current Brivis range — the Buffalo, Star Pro and HX23 II — is Rinnai-engineered with Brivis branding and is sold as one of the more efficient ducted gas options on the Australian market. So when you're buying "new Brivis" today, you're effectively buying Rinnai build quality with the Brivis name and dealer network.

For Adelaide homeowners, that ownership history matters in two ways. First, parts for newer Brivis (post-2014) are excellent — they share components with current Rinnai units. Second, parts for the older SP523 and pre-2010 HX23 are getting harder to source. Specific items like obsolete control boards, original heat exchanger castings, and discontinued fan assemblies sometimes can't be found at any price.

We service every Brivis. The honest reality is that older units (15+ years) sometimes can't economically be repaired — and we'll always tell you straight when we get there. But for newer Brivis and well-maintained older ones, regular servicing keeps them safe, efficient and running for many more winters.

Models we service weekly

Common Brivis models we service in Adelaide

If your unit isn't listed, photograph the data plate (usually inside the cover) and text it to 0485 676 319.

Brivis SP523

2000–2012 era. The classic ducted Brivis in Adelaide. We see at least one a week. Common faults: heat exchanger, fan motor, control board.

Brivis HX23 / HX23 II

Original HX23 (2005–2014); HX23 II is the current Rinnai-era model. Premium ducted unit, modulating burner. Newer models well-supported.

Brivis Star Pro

Current Rinnai-era ducted Brivis. 5- and 6-star models. Excellent parts availability and modern fault diagnostics.

Brivis Buffalo

Mid-range current ducted offering, replacing the older SP series. We service and repair across all model variants.

Brivis SP423 / older SP series

Late 1990s to early 2000s. Many still running in Salisbury, Elizabeth, Modbury and the older northern suburbs. Repairable but parts lead time can be 2-3 days.

Brivis NC range

Older ducted line from the late 1990s. We can service but parts are very limited — usually consumables and ignition components only.

Brivis Networker controllers

Wall controller used across the SP and Star Pro range. Common failure: blank LCD or stuck zone selection. Often a simple board swap.

Brivis Touch / Smart controller

Touch-screen wall units on newer Buffalo and Star Pro. Pair with the heater itself; we troubleshoot both sides.

What goes wrong

Common Brivis faults we see in Adelaide

Brivis has been in Aussie homes long enough that the failure patterns are well known. Here's what trips us up week after week.

  • Cracked heat exchanger (older SP523) — The big one. Adelaide's wide temperature swings stress the heat exchanger over 15+ winters. Once cracked, the unit must be condemned — combustion gases (including CO) leak into the house air. We check this first on any pre-2010 Brivis.
  • Fan motor failure — The indoor fan stops or rattles loudly. Sometimes a capacitor, sometimes the motor itself. Capacitor swap is $189-$209; full motor replacement $389-$549 depending on model.
  • Control board (PCB) failure — Symptoms: blank controller, won't ignite, random shutdowns, fault codes that don't make sense. Boards for current Brivis are available; for older SP523 they're getting scarce. $489-$789 supplied and fitted when we can get one.
  • Gas valve sticking or failing — Random no-fire days, usually intermittent. Gas valve replacement on Brivis is typically $389-$489 fitted.
  • Igniter / hot surface ignition fail — Heater clicks, doesn't fire. Usually the igniter element has worn out. Cheap fix on most Brivis: $189-$229.
  • Fan motor capacitor — Heater fires, indoor fan hums but doesn't spin. Common on units 8+ years old. $189 fitted in most cases.
  • Networker controller blank screen — Wall controller goes dark. Could be the controller, the controller wiring, or the main board. We diagnose first.

If your Brivis is over 15 years old: always have the heat exchanger inspected before another winter. CO from a cracked exchanger is silent and deadly.

FAQ

Brivis service Adelaide — frequently asked

$149 inc GST for wall and space heater Brivis units. $199 inc GST for ducted (SP523, HX23, Star Pro, Buffalo). Repairs are quoted upfront from $189 plus parts. We give you the total before starting. No call-out fees.
For newer Brivis (post-2014), parts are excellent — Rinnai owns Brivis and shares many components. For older SP523 and pre-2010 HX23, common consumables (igniters, fan motors, gas valves) are still sourceable but lead time can be 1-3 days. Heat exchangers for pre-2005 Brivis are increasingly hard to find at any price.
Heat exchanger cracks are the headline failure on older SP523 units (2005-2012 era). Other common faults are fan motor failure, control board issues, and gas valve sticking. We always inspect the heat exchanger first on any Brivis over 12 years old, because a crack means the heater must be condemned for CO safety.
Brivis units made after 2012 are generally worth repairing. For pre-2010 units it depends — if the heat exchanger is sound and the fault is a sensor, igniter or fan motor, repair makes sense. If the heat exchanger is cracked or the control board has failed on a 15+ year old unit, replacement is usually the better long-term call. We give you both options with real numbers.
Yes. Brivis was acquired by Rinnai in 2014 and continues to sell new ducted gas heating in Australia, mostly under the Buffalo and Star Pro names. So new Brivis is essentially Rinnai-engineered with Brivis branding — good news for parts and reliability.
The heat exchanger is the metal chamber that separates combustion gases from the air being warmed and pushed into your home. If it cracks, combustion products (including carbon monoxide) leak into the household air. CO is colourless and odourless. Adelaide has had documented CO poisoning deaths from cracked heat exchangers in older ducted heaters. We always inspect, always.
