About the brand

About Braemar gas heaters

Braemar is an Australian-made brand owned by Seeley International — a Lonsdale-based South Australian company that's been building heating and cooling for Aussie homes since 1972. That local connection is part of why Braemar dominates Adelaide. Roughly one in three ducted gas heaters we walk into in this city is a Braemar.

The big push happened between 2000 and 2015. New estates in Mawson Lakes, Golden Grove, Greenwith, Aberfoyle Park and across the Adelaide Hills were built with Braemar TQM ducted units as the standard fit. The TQM5 (5-star) and TQM5HV (high velocity) became the workhorses — quiet, efficient for their era, and serviceable. The Quattro range followed for premium installs, and the TG / TGM lines covered the budget end.

What we like about Braemar from a tradie perspective: the units are designed to be opened up. Burner trays slide out, heat exchangers are accessible, control boards are sensibly laid out, and Seeley still supplies parts for nearly every model built since the late 1990s. That's not true of every brand. A 20-year-old Braemar TG can usually be brought back to life for the cost of a flame rod, a capacitor and an honest service. The same can't always be said for its competitors.

Where Braemar shows its age: the older fan motor capacitors fail in the heat-soak conditions of Adelaide ceilings. Ignition controllers from the early 2000s are a known weak point. And the 5-star rating that was impressive in 2008 is just average now — if your unit is over 18 years old and needing repeat repairs, a modern Rinnai or new-gen Braemar replacement will pay back in gas bills inside 5-7 winters.

Braemar TQM5 / TQM5HV

2005–2015 era. The most common ducted Braemar in Adelaide. 5-star efficiency. We carry flame sensors, ignition controls and 7uF/10uF capacitors for these.

Braemar TQM4

2000–2008 era. 4-star precursor to the TQM5. Same general layout, slightly different burner. Parts still available.

Braemar Quattro

Premium Braemar ducted, 2010–present. Quieter operation, modulating burner. We keep modulating gas valves as a special-order line.

Braemar TG / TGM

Late 1990s through mid-2000s budget ducted. Many still running across Hills and northern suburbs. Workhorse units — repairable if you want to keep one going.

Braemar Econoline

Older 3-star ducted ranges from the late 1990s. Usually 25+ years old now — we'll service but honestly assess whether replacement makes more sense.

Braemar SuperSeries (wall)

Wall-mounted Braemar gas heaters in older homes. Less common than ducted but we see them in inner-suburb 1970s/80s homes.

Braemar Bistro / Combination

Combo gas heating + evaporative cooling units. We service the gas side; cooling side serviced separately.

Braemar Spectrolink controllers

Wall controllers paired with TQM and Quattro. Common failure mode is the LCD blanking out — usually a board fault, not the controller.

What goes wrong

Common Braemar faults we see in Adelaide

After thousands of Braemar service calls across Adelaide, the same handful of faults make up about 80% of what we fix. Here's the shortlist.

  • Flame sensor failure (TQM5 / Quattro) — Heater ignites, runs 5-10 seconds, then locks out. The flame rod gets coated with combustion residue and stops detecting flame. Clean or replace; usually $189-$229 fitted.
  • Ignition lockout — Three failed ignition attempts and the controller goes into lockout. Could be the igniter itself, the controller, the gas valve, or a flame sensor issue. We diagnose first, quote second.
  • Fan motor capacitor failure — Heater fires, burner runs, but the indoor fan never starts (or hums and trips). Cheap fix: $189-$209 with the capacitor replaced. Common in TQM5/TQM4 units 10+ years old.
  • Gas valve sticking — Older Braemars (2000-2010) develop sticky gas valves that intermittently won't open. Symptom: random no-fire days. Replacement valve typically $389-$489 fitted.
  • Cracked heat exchanger — Rare on units under 15 years old. When it happens it's a CO safety issue and the heater must be condemned. Replacement heat exchanger is rarely economic on older units — usually means a new system.
  • Blocked burner / spider webs — Adelaide red-back and daddy-long-legs love the warm, dark burner cavity over summer. Causes yellow flame, soot, and CO. A standard service clears it.
  • Spectrolink controller blanking — Display goes dark mid-winter. Usually the main control board, not the wall controller. Diagnose required before quoting.

Important: if your Braemar is showing fault codes (E1, E2, F1 etc.), tell us when you call. We can usually narrow the issue before we arrive — saves time and saves you money.

FAQ

Braemar service Adelaide — frequently asked

$149 inc GST for wall and space heater Braemars. $199 inc GST for ducted (TQM5, Quattro, TG, TGM). Repairs are quoted upfront from $189 plus parts. We give you the full total before starting work — no call-out fees, no surprise add-ons.
Yes. Braemar is owned by Seeley International — an Adelaide company headquartered at Lonsdale — so SA parts distribution is excellent. Flame sensors, fan motor capacitors, ignition controls, gas valves, igniters and burner components are available for almost every Braemar built since the late 1990s, often same day.
Flame sensor failure. The TQM5 fires up, runs for 5-10 seconds, then locks out. A clean or replacement of the flame rod fixes it about 90% of the time, in the $189-$229 range. Fan motor capacitor failure (heater fires but indoor fan doesn't start) is the second most common.
Every 2 years minimum — that's both Seeley International's recommendation and SA gas safety regulation. Heavy-use ducted systems benefit from annual servicing. Skipping services voids most warranty claims and increases CO risk.
Most Braemars made after 2005 are worth repairing — they're tough, serviceable, and parts are available. We start recommending replacement once a heater is over 18-20 years old, has a cracked heat exchanger, or repairs would cost more than about 40% of a new unit. We always tell you honestly which side of the line your heater sits on, with no upsell pressure.
Braemar fault codes vary by model and era, but broadly: E1 / E01 is usually ignition failure (sensor, igniter or gas valve). E2 / E02 is often overheat or fan-related. F-codes typically point to the controller or thermistor. Tell us the code when you call — we can often narrow it down before arriving and bring the right parts.
