About Rinnai gas heaters
Rinnai is a Japanese gas appliance manufacturer founded in 1920, with Australian operations dating back to the 1970s. In Adelaide they've become the dominant brand for new gas heater installations from the mid-2000s onwards. Walk through any newly built or recently renovated home in Pasadena, Burnside, Glenelg North or the Adelaide Hills and there's a strong chance the gas heating is Rinnai.
The headline products in Adelaide homes are the EnergySaver wall and console heaters — particularly the 561, 559 and 553 models. These are flued, high-efficiency space heaters that became the go-to replacement for older wall heaters from the late 2000s onward. The Energypro range covers ducted gas heating, with both standard and modulating options. Rinnai also makes continuous-flow hot water units, which we don't service, but they're often paired with the heating system.
What makes Rinnai stand out from a tradie perspective: build quality, parts support, and predictable failure patterns. Components are well-engineered, the diagnostic interface is more sophisticated than most competitors, and Rinnai Australia maintains current production with strong SA dealer support. The other thing worth knowing: Rinnai bought Brivis in 2014. So if you've got a newer Brivis, you're effectively running Rinnai-engineered hardware with the Brivis name. That's good news for parts and reliability across both brands.

What goes wrong
Common Rinnai faults we see in Adelaide
Rinnai units are reliable enough that the failure list is shorter than for older brands. Here's what we actually see.
- Igniter element wear — Heater clicks repeatedly, doesn't fire. The hot-surface igniter eventually wears out after thousands of cycles. Cheap, well-stocked replacement: $189-$229 fitted. Most common Rinnai EnergySaver fault.
- Flame rod (flame sensor) coating — Heater fires, runs briefly, locks out. The flame rod gets coated with combustion residue. Clean or replace: $189-$249 fitted.
- Fan motor failure — Indoor fan stops or rattles. Often the bearings on units 10+ years old. Capacitor swap is the cheap fix; full motor replacement is $389-$549 depending on model.
- Fault code displayed (e.g. 11, 12, 14) — Rinnai's diagnostic code system is detailed. Code 11 = ignition failure, 12 = flame failure during run, 14 = overheat, etc. Tell us the code when you call — saves diagnostic time on site.
- Air pressure switch fault (flued models) — Heater won't start, controller shows fault. Sometimes blocked flue, sometimes failed switch. Always inspect the flue first.
- Water pressure issues (combo units) — Rinnai also makes combination heating + hot water units. Hot water faults sometimes show up as heater faults. We diagnose both sides.
- Controller communication faults — Wall controller stops talking to the heater. Usually a wiring or board issue. Symphony / Cosmo controllers are robust — fault is rarely the controller itself.
Good news on Rinnai: almost every fault we see has a known cause, a known part, and a same-day or next-day fix. Repairs rarely turn into multi-visit projects.
