About the brand

About Vulcan gas heaters

Vulcan was once one of the biggest names in Australian gas heating. Through the 1970s, 80s and 90s the brand built and sold thousands of console heaters, wall heaters and inbuilt units that ended up in middle Australia's living rooms — Adelaide very much included. The Heritage console and the Heritage 360 (rotating front for radiant heat in any direction) were household names.

The brand changed hands a few times in the 2000s and was eventually wound down as a manufacturer. Today, Vulcan as a heater manufacturer effectively no longer exists. The units we attend in Adelaide are all 20+ years old — many 30+. They're particularly common in the older suburbs: Gawler, Salisbury, Modbury, Elizabeth, parts of Christies Beach, and Adelaide Hills towns where the same family has lived since the 1980s and the original Vulcan heater is still cranking out warm air every winter.

The honest reality of servicing a Vulcan today is that we're often working at the edge of the unit's safe life. The combustion chambers and heat exchangers in 25-30 year old gas heaters can fatigue. Original control parts (boards, modulating valves, model-specific fan motors) aren't manufactured anymore and only sometimes appear on the second-hand market. Some Vulcans we attend can be safely serviced and given another few winters; others, we have to honestly say, should be retired.

What we will do: a full safety inspection (CO test, heat exchanger inspection, flue check, gas pressure test) on any Vulcan you ask us to look at. If it's safe and we can source parts, we'll service or repair it. If it's not safe, we'll explain exactly why, give you a no-pressure replacement quote, and not charge you for the diagnostic visit if it leads to a replacement booking.

What we won't do: pretend a 1985 Vulcan with a corroded heat exchanger is fine just to take your service money. Carbon monoxide kills Australians every winter and a lot of those deaths trace back to old gas heaters that nobody wanted to honestly assess.

Models we still service

Common Vulcan models we service in Adelaide

If your Vulcan isn't listed, photograph the data plate (often on the back or inside the front cover) and text it to 0485 676 319.

Vulcan Heritage console

1980s–1990s freestanding console. Common in older Adelaide living rooms. Often serviceable if heat exchanger and flue check out clean.

Vulcan Heritage 360

Rotating-front console — turn the radiant face to where you need heat. Iconic Vulcan model. Now 25+ years old; full safety check essential.

Vulcan Inbuilt

Built-in wall units, 1990s–early 2000s. Often need flue and combustion chamber inspection. We service where safe; recommend replacement when not.

Vulcan wall heaters (various)

Wall-mounted Vulcan space heaters from the 1980s and 90s. Usually pilot-light driven — common fault is thermocouple failure.

Vulcan ducted (older)

Vulcan briefly made ducted units. Rare in Adelaide today and parts are very limited. We service if safe; usually recommend replacement.

Vulcan log-fire effect

Decorative gas log Vulcan units in older period homes. Service possible; aesthetic parts (logs, decorative pieces) very limited.

Vulcan gas wall furnace

Recessed wall furnaces from the 1980s. Many still in original install in Hills and northern Adelaide homes. Always have the flue checked.

Vulcan-branded under other ownership

A handful of later units carried the Vulcan name under different owners. We assess each on age, condition and parts availability.

What goes wrong

Common Vulcan faults we see in Adelaide

After decades of winters, Vulcans show their age in predictable ways. Here's the shortlist.

  • Pilot won't stay lit (thermocouple) — The number one Vulcan fault. The thermocouple sits in the pilot flame and tells the gas valve to stay open. After 20+ years they oxidise and fail. Replacement is $189-$229 fitted where the part is available.
  • Gas valve ageing — The original gas valves on 30-year-old Vulcans get sticky, leaky, or fail outright. Some are still replaceable with universal aftermarket valves; others aren't. We assess case by case.
  • Pilot light won't ignite at all — Could be the piezo igniter, the pilot tube, the gas valve, or the pilot orifice blocked. Most fixable for under $250 if parts are available.
  • Cracked or corroded heat exchanger — The big one on Vulcans 25+ years old. Combustion chambers fatigue. Cracks let CO into your home. We will not pass a Vulcan with a cracked heat exchanger — it must be replaced (the unit, not the part).
  • Flue corrosion or partial collapse — Original Vulcan flues from the 1980s often look ok from outside but are corroded internally. We inspect with a borescope where needed. A bad flue means the unit can't run safely.
  • Ignition wiring failure — Wiring degrades over decades, especially in roof spaces with temperature extremes. Repairable on most Vulcans.
  • Yellow flame, sooting — Sign of poor combustion. Could be burner blockage (cleanable), wrong gas pressure, or a deeper combustion chamber issue. Always investigate.

Important: if your Vulcan is showing any signs of poor combustion (yellow flame, soot, smell, headaches when running) — turn it off and call us. Don't run it again until it's been safety-checked.

FAQ

Vulcan service Adelaide — frequently asked

$149 inc GST for Vulcan wall and inbuilt heater service. $199 inc GST for ducted (rare). Repairs are quoted upfront from $189 plus parts. With Vulcan we always do a full age and condition assessment first — there's no point sinking money into a heater that's past its safe service life.
No. Vulcan stopped manufacturing gas heaters years ago. Most Vulcan units we see in Adelaide are from the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. The brand has heritage value but the units are at or near end-of-life. We service them where it's safe to and recommend replacement where it isn't.
It depends on the part. Universal items (thermocouples, basic gas valves, igniters) we can usually source from the aftermarket. Vulcan-specific parts like control boards, particular fan motors, and original heat exchangers are very limited and sometimes impossible to find. We're upfront about what we can and can't fix before quoting.
Almost always a failed thermocouple on older Vulcan heaters. The thermocouple is the small probe that sits in the pilot flame and tells the gas valve to stay open. After 15-25 years they oxidise and fail. Replacement is $189-$229 fitted on most Vulcans where the part is available. It's the most common Vulcan repair we do.
If your Vulcan is over 25 years old, has had repeat repairs, shows any sign of poor combustion (yellow flame, soot), or has a cracked heat exchanger — replacement is the right call. Modern gas heaters use 30-50% less gas than a 1990s Vulcan, parts are abundant, and the safety systems are far better. We give you an honest assessment with a no-pressure replacement quote alongside any repair quote.
A well-maintained, safety-checked Vulcan with an intact heat exchanger and clean flue can still run safely. A neglected Vulcan with corroded combustion components is genuinely dangerous — carbon monoxide poisoning is silent and serious. The only way to know which one you've got is a proper inspection. If it's been more than 2 years since your last service, book one now.
