Help guide · Error codes

Error code on your heater? Here's what it means.

Modern gas heaters do a lot of self-diagnosis and tell you exactly what's wrong with a code on the controller. The hard part is decoding it. Below are the common Braemar, Brivis, Bonaire, Vulcan, Rinnai and Pyrox codes we see in Adelaide every winter — what they actually mean, what to try, and what we charge to fix them.

What's happening

The heater is telling you why it stopped

Every gas heater built in the last 15 years has a control board that monitors the burner, the fan, the gas valve, the flame sensor, and the temperature limits. When something goes outside spec, the board logs the fault, shuts the unit down, and shows a code on the controller. The code maps to a specific subsystem — flame failure, overheat, fan fault, valve fault, controller comms.

The codes are brand-specific. A "1" on a Braemar means something different to a "1" on a Rinnai. Below is the cheat sheet for the brands we see most often in Adelaide. If your code isn't here, ring us and tell us the brand, model and code — we'll either know it or look it up while you're on the phone.

Cheat sheet

Common gas heater error codes in Adelaide

Braemar (ducted)

  • E1 / Flame fail: Burner won't ignite or sensor lost flame. Igniter, sensor, or gas pressure. $260+.
  • E2 / Overheat: Heat exchanger overtemp. Filter or fan issue. Free if it's the filter.
  • E3 / Fan fault: Fan motor or fan-speed sensor. $420+.
  • E4 / Comms: Controller-to-board comms lost. Wiring or controller. $180+.

Brivis (ducted)

  • E1 / Ignition: Multiple ignition attempts failed. Igniter or flame sensor. $260+.
  • E2 / Overheat lockout: Same as Braemar — usually filter. Free with service.
  • E5 / Air pressure: Flue restriction or fan issue. $180+.
  • E10 / Limit switch: Heat exchanger limit tripped. Service required.

Bonaire (ducted)

  • FAULT / LOCKOUT: Generic safety lockout. Reset once. If returns, fitter.
  • SERVICE: Service interval reminder, not a fault. Book the annual service.
  • HEAT EXC: Heat exchanger sensor fault — needs fitter.

Rinnai & Vulcan (wall heaters)

  • 10 / Pilot fail: Pilot won't stay lit. Thermocouple usually. $150–$220.
  • 11 / Ignition: Burner won't ignite. Igniter or gas valve. $260+.
  • 12 / Flame loss: Burner lit then dropped. Flame sensor. $45–$140.
  • 14 / Heat exchanger: Overtemp. Service / inspection required.

Pyrox & Cannon (older units)

  • Most show no code — the unit just won't fire. Diagnose by symptom.
  • Lockout LED on: Reset once. Returns = fitter.
  • Note: Parts for some Cannon models are end-of-life. We'll tell you straight if replacement makes more sense.

Other brands

  • Got a brand or code not listed? Ring us with model number + code visible. Most codes we know offhand. The rest we'll look up while you're on the phone — no charge for the call.
Safety check

Is this dangerous?

Mostly no. An error code with the heater in lockout is the safety system doing exactly what it should — refusing to run when something is off. The unit is sitting there cold. CO risk is essentially zero in lockout state.

Stop and call us if: the controller is showing an overheat code that comes back within minutes of every reset (the heat exchanger may be damaged), or you can smell gas around the unit (call 1800 427 532 first, then us).

What to do in the next 5 minutes

1

Note the brand + code

Take a photo of the controller. We need brand, model, and the exact code (number or letters).

2

Try one reset

Switch the unit's isolator OFF for 60 seconds, then back ON. One attempt only.

3

Filter check

If the code is overheat-related (E2 etc), replace the return-air filter. Often fixes it on its own.

4

Call us

Ring 0485 676 319 with the code ready. Same-day metro Adelaide.

DIY?

Can I fix it myself?

You can do one reset attempt and a filter replacement. That's it. Anything past those needs a licensed gas fitter under SA's Plumbing, Gas and Electrical Services Act 1995 — including pulling the front cover off to look inside.

What you should not do: keep cycling the isolator switch in the hope the error clears. Repeated forced resets damage the ignition system and can mask a serious fault. One reset, then wait — if the code returns, call us.

When to call

Call us today if

  • The error code returned after one reset
  • The code is in the table above and points to a fitter-job
  • The unit hasn't been serviced in 2+ years
  • You can smell gas around the heater (call 1800 427 532 first)
  • You don't recognise the code (ring us — we'll decode it on the phone)
Honest pricing

How much will the repair cost?

2026 Adelaide pricing, GST included, no call-out fee. Diagnostic is included in the repair price.

  • Filter-related lockouts: $80 (filter only) or free with a service
  • Flame sensor / igniter codes: $260–$330
  • Pilot/thermocouple codes: $150–$220
  • Thermostat codes: $260–$420
  • Gas valve codes: $400–$650
  • Fan motor codes: $420–$780
  • Control board codes: $480–$950

We always quote the total before starting. If we find the cause is heat exchanger damage from long-term neglect, we'll tell you straight whether repair makes sense.

Response time

How quickly can you come out?

Same day across Adelaide metro if you ring before 10am. Have the brand and code ready when you ring — we'll usually know exactly what part to bring on the truck. Most repair jobs are done in a single 60–90 minute visit.

FAQ

Error codes — common questions

On most Braemar ducted units, E1 is a no-flame fault — the burner failed to ignite or the flame sensor lost the signal. Common causes: dirty flame sensor, weak igniter, low gas pressure, or empty LPG bottle. Same-day fix from $260.
Brivis E2 is typically an overheat lockout — heat exchanger ran too hot. Almost always a blocked filter or return-air grille. Replace filter first, book a fitter if it returns.
Generic safety lockout after multiple failed ignitions. Reset by switching the isolator off for 60 seconds. If it returns, the cause is usually flame sensor, igniter, or gas valve — needs a licensed gas fitter.
One reset cycle — isolator off for 60 seconds, back on. If the error returns within 24 hours, stop and call a fitter. Repeated forced resets damage the ignition system.
Same-day Adelaide metro for any error-code callout. Have the brand and code ready when you ring — we'll usually know what part to bring.
