Gas Heater Service Cost in Adelaide 2026 (Full Price Guide)
TL;DR: A standard gas heater service in Adelaide costs $180–$240 for wall furnaces and space heaters, and $240–$320 for ducted systems. Watch out for $99 specials that leave half the job undone. Real pricing depends on heater type, age, location, and what the fitter finds on inspection.
Quick price guide — Adelaide 2026
| Heater type | Price range | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Wall furnace (Vulcan, Pyrox, Braemar Econ) | $180–$230 | 45–60 min |
| Space heater / flued room heater (Rinnai Energysaver, Cannon, Regency) | $190–$240 | 60 min |
| Ducted gas heating (Braemar, Brivis, Bonaire) | $240–$320 | 75–90 min |
| Central/commercial unit | $320–$480 | 90–120 min |
| After-hours / emergency call-out | +$120–$180 surcharge | — |
These are fair-market prices from a licensed gas fitter who does the job properly. If someone quotes below this consistently, ask what's being skipped.
Price by heater type (and why it varies)
Wall furnaces — $180–$230
Simplest unit to service. Remove the front panel, vacuum the burner and heat exchanger, clean the pilot assembly, test combustion, check flue. Most wall furnaces in Adelaide are Vulcan Heritage or Pyrox — both straightforward units that a good fitter can turn around in under an hour.
Older Vulcans (pre-2005) take longer because the heat exchanger needs more care. Expect the upper end of the range.
Space heaters / flued room heaters — $190–$240
Rinnai Energysavers, Cannon Canterburys, Regency and similar. Similar process to wall furnaces but with more components — sealed combustion, fan motors, electronic ignition.
These units sit in the living room and run long hours, so a more thorough service justifies the slightly higher price.
Ducted gas heating — $240–$320
The big one. Ducted systems have more components (large burner, heat exchanger, circulation fan, control board, zone dampers) and more checks (duct condition, return air filter, zone operation). Brands: Braemar, Brivis, Bonaire, and some older Vulcan Multiflow units.
Units in roof cavities cost more than underfloor or ground-mounted ones. Sydney-style "side of house" placements are the easiest. Adelaide bungalows often have them in the roof, which takes longer and costs more.
Central/commercial — $320+
Large-capacity units for big homes, shops or light commercial. Pricing depends on kW rating, access, and whether it's flued through a roof cavity. Get a site-specific quote.
What's actually included in a proper service
A real service is not just "have a look and a vacuum." Ours — and any decent fitter's — covers at least 20 checks:
- Visual inspection of the entire unit and surrounds
- Isolation valve and gas line inspection
- Burner removal, cleaning and reinstallation
- Heat exchanger inspection for cracks, corrosion, soot
- Pilot assembly and ignition electrode cleaning
- Flame sensor cleaning
- Gas pressure check at the test point
- Flame colour and combustion quality check
- Combustion analysis — CO, CO2, O2 readings
- Flue inspection (internal baffles and external cowl)
- Safety switch and overheat cut-out test
- Thermostat calibration and operation test
- Fan and blower motor inspection
- Return air filter inspection / replacement
- Electrical terminal check
- Gas leak test at all accessible joints
- Full cycle test from cold start
- Written service report with readings
- Sticker on unit recording date and fitter licence
- Warranty-compliant record for your files

Extras that bump the price
Some things aren't part of a standard service and will be quoted on top if needed:
- Thermocouple replacement: $90–$150 parts and labour
- Ignition electrode: $110–$180
- Flame sensor: $90–$140
- Gas valve replacement: $380–$650
- Fan motor replacement: $420–$780
- Control board replacement: $480–$950
- Heat exchanger replacement: often $1,400+, usually the trigger to replace the whole unit
- Duct cleaning add-on: $180–$320 depending on duct length and access
A good fitter will ring you from the job before doing any extra work, explain the fault, show the parts if possible, and quote before proceeding. If someone quietly adds $400 to the invoice at the end — don't use them again.
Are $99 gas heater services legit?
Short answer: almost never.
Long answer: a proper service takes 45–90 minutes of licensed labour. The fitter's hourly cost (wages, super, insurance, vehicle, gas detector calibration, tool replacement) is $110–$140/hr before profit. Do the maths: $99 barely covers their fuel and the half-hour of drive time each way.
What you usually get for $99:
- A 15-minute visual "check" with no combustion analysis
- No written report
- A pushy upsell to $400+ in "required" extras on the day
- Sometimes: a handyman or apprentice working without supervision — which breaks SA gas fitting regulations (see our SA gas fitting regulations guide)
Pay the fair price once to someone licensed, and get a real service. You'll know it's been done because there's paperwork.
How to legitimately save money
- Book pre-season (March–May). Many fitters run 10–15% off in shoulder months. We do.
- Multi-unit discount. Servicing two heaters at the same address at once usually saves $40–$80 on the second.
- Service every two years on younger units. No point paying for annual servicing on a five-year-old ducted unit that's getting light use.
- Keep the return air filter clean yourself. Reduces wear, reduces the chance of expensive repairs.
- Never skip in favour of "I'll just replace it when it dies." An un-serviced heater that dies mid-winter costs you a heater plus emergency replacement premium plus weeks of no heat.
How to compare quotes properly
Three questions every quote should answer. If it doesn't, ring and ask:
- Is it a flat rate or hourly + call-out? Flat rate is usually better for homeowners.
- Does it include combustion analysis and a written report? If not, it's not a full service.
- Is the fitter licensed PGE (plumbing, gas, and electrical)? Ask for the licence number. SA gas work must be done by a licensed gas fitter — see SA Consumer and Business Services for the register.
Anatomy of a real service invoice
Most homeowners have never seen a line-item gas service invoice, so here's what a legitimate one should look like. Example from a ducted service last month at a Prospect home:
- Ducted gas heater service (Brivis Buffalo, 35MJ): $285 flat rate
- Flame sensor clean (minor, included): $0
- Return air filter replacement: $18 (filter only, labour included)
- Combustion analysis report: included
- Service record sticker: included
- Total: $303 inc GST
What you should NOT see on a legitimate invoice:
- "Miscellaneous" or "sundries" lines
- Cash-only pricing or no GST listed
- Surprise parts charges that weren't mentioned on site
- Call-out fee on top of a flat rate (one or the other, not both)
- "Safety inspection" separate from the service — that's already in the service
If any of those show up, push back or don't use that fitter again.
FAQ
Do I get a receipt and a service record?
Yes — you should. A tax receipt and a service record sticker or certificate. If you don't, you won't be able to claim on warranty down the line.
Is GST included in those prices?
Prices in this guide are GST inclusive, which is standard for residential gas work quoted to homeowners in SA.
How long should a gas heater service take?
45–90 minutes depending on type and access. Anything under 30 minutes and corners are being cut.
Can I get a same-day service in winter?
Usually yes before June, rarely yes in July. Book early. See our Adelaide winter heating checklist for timing.
What if the service uncovers a big problem?
The fitter will ring you from the site with a quote before doing any repair work. You're never billed for extras without approval.
